Snoring can be a serious problem for relationships as well as a threat to good health. Spouses need to work together to find a solution for the problem. When one partner finds it necessary to use earplugs to get some sleep, and the other makes no effort to solve the problem, resentment will surely result.

To stop snoring, you must discover the reason you are snoring to begin with. For instance, there are medical problems, including sleep apnea, that can cause snoring. The only way to diagnose these is to see your doctor and begin treatment. In fact, it could even get worse.

If you suffer from snoring, it is important that you not sleep on your back. This position narrows the airways in your throat, thus, reducing airflow. This lack of air can be a cause of snoring. It is recommended that you sleep on either your right or left side instead.

Avoid drinking alcohol within 5 hours of bedtime. Alcohol, along with other sedative drugs, causes the muscles at the back of the throat to relax. When these muscles relax, you are more apt to snore. Stay away from those nightcaps--you may actually sleep more soundly if you do not drink before bed.

Try not to take any medications that contain sedatives, if you want to stop snoring. Sedatives are known to relax the throat muscles and when these muscles are too relaxed, snoring occurs. If you medications have sedatives, speak with your doctor about switching to a similar medication that does not have a sedative.

If you snore in the winter months, try sleeping with a humidifier. Sometimes very dry air, such as that we are exposed to in the dead of winter, causes a stuffed up nose. This makes a person breathe through their mouth and often results in snoring. A good quality humidifier will add moisture to the air and help you to avoid this problem.

Consider using a chin strap to keep your snoring under control. Chin straps keep your mouth closed so it is difficult to snore. These devices are available in a wide variety of styles. Many are elastic and simply fit over your head. Others are fitted with Velcro so they can be custom adjusted to fit your head.

Dry air in the home can cause snoring. Too much aridity in the air can dry out your throat and nasal membranes. When they become dry, they tend to swell and that can lead to congestion. Congestion will lead to constricted airflow in the airways. Try to employ a humidifier in your bedroom to help keep the air moist.

Exercise

Minimize snoring by exercising regularly. Exercising helps to keep your breathing stable, preventing snoring. Exercise is crucial in keeping your respiratory system working properly, but it is also a good way to relieve stress. When you are stressed out, your breathing pattern can be affected, making you more prone to snoring.

Here is an effective exercise you can use to make your snoring less severe: Push your tongue back and forth against the rear of your upper incisors. Move your tongue back and slide it up to the back of your teeth, without stopping, for approximately three minutes. Building muscle this way will strengthen your airways, keeping them open and cutting down on snoring.

Start an exercise program. Snoring can be caused by not being in good shape. As you exercise and the muscles in your arms and legs become stronger and more toned, so will your throat muscles. Well- developed and toned throat muscles decrease the chance of your snoring because your throat remains open.

Use the information contained in this article and work with your partner to find a solution for a snoring problem. You may be able to alleviate the problem considerably with over the counter aids. If none of these ideas help, you may need to see a doctor and set up a sleep study.
